Your most frequently asked questions answered

Who’s going to take over the business you’ve built? If you sell, how do you manage the change of ownership? Will Capital Gains Tax apply? How can you legitimately lighten the tax burden? What about divorce? How will that affect the company? Who do you want to inherit? How can you help your children get onto the property ladder? Can the Bank of Mum and Dad give cash gifts?

Can you help me as an entrepreneur?

Yes. Entrepreneurs are the people who power the UK economy. In return for the risks they take, the government does offer some rewards. We can help you identify all that apply to you, to help you make the most from all your hard work.

Can you help me with my Income Tax?

Yes. We take the time to get to know you so we can establish which deductions and tax breaks can help you lower your tax bill. In addition, we’ll help you plan how best to manage your business across the whole year, not just at year-end.

Can you help me with Inheritance Tax?

Yes. The standard inheritance tax rate is 40% on any estate worth more than £325,000 but there are many different ways of reducing this, depending on your personal circumstances and wishes. The best thing is to talk to us so we can give you advice tailored to your specific needs.

Can you help me with Family Trusts and Gifts?

Yes. You can give money or assets to family and friends and the gift becomes completely tax-free after seven years. Trusts are another way of avoiding tax but there are advantages and disadvantages to them. Again, talk to us so we can give you personal counsel.

Can you help me with Capital Gains Tax?

Yes. CGT is payable on the profits you make over time in shares, funds, business assets and even, sometimes, in property deals. There is an annual exemption of £12,300 but gains above that can be billed at 10% or 20%, depending on your other sources of income.

Can you help me with Stamp Duty Land Tax?

Yes. The regulations are complicated but we can help you avoid painful surprises if you’re thinking about developing a property or buying a second property or land for investment purposes.

Can you help me understand Property Tax?

Yes. Few accountants have the in-depth knowledge to give you best advice in this most complicated of sectors. But we do. More than simply guiding you safely through the quagmire of rules and regulations, we can explain your obligations without jargon in good, plain English.

Can you help me with Relocation Taxes?

Yes. If you are an employee of a company and you are asked to relocate, you can claim expenses up to £8,000. However, it is an exemption rather than a deduction. If you want to know what that means, call us and tell us your exact circumstances. If there are savings to be made, we know where to find them.

If you have any other questions, we’d be happy to answer them if we can. Get in touch. Talk to one of our Partners or email info@sobellrhodes.co.uk

” I’m not going to give my name because, to be honest, I’m embarrassed by what happened as well as hugely grateful to Sobell Rhodes for straightening out my tax situation. Over the years, I’ve built up a portfolio of buy-to-let properties and they have returned me a decent income. I didn’t declare the money I made to the tax authorities because I had a regular job and paid PAYE on that. I didn’t want to make things complicated and, inevitably, I made things complicated. Eventually, frightened that I might go to prison, I got in touch with Sobell Rhodes. They didn’t pass judgement and were nothing but practical and helpful. They helped me settle with Inland Revenue for a lot less than I thought I was going to have to pay. I did not go to prison, nor was I ruined by my stupidity. I owe Melvin bigtime.”
